CBS NFL Today analyst, NFL legend, and actor Tony Gonzalez, who is in the new film xXx: Return of Xander Cage joined me today on The Jake Brown Show on CBS Radio’s Play.it. Gonzalez will watch his former team, the Atlanta Falcons, take on the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Sunday.
The Falcons defense will have the tough task of trying to stop Aaron Rodgers this weekend. That’s something that hasn’t happened in nine weeks. Rodgers has begun to supplant his name with some of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. Gonzalez actually took it a step further than ‘one of the best.’
“When he’s on, when he’s at his best, I don’t think there’s a better quarterback to every play this game…ever,” said Gonzalez. “He’s already in my top five. He’s teetering on that best ever the way he’s playing, the way he’s been playing because he can slice and dice you with Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning…he can just sit back and slice you up. When you do get pressure and you blitz him and he gets out with his legs, the athleticism and the way he can throw on the run, noone has ever seen this combination of pocket passer, evade the pass rushing, and spin out of it and throw for a touchdown, discount double check. Noone has ever seen anything like this.
“The only thing that separates him from Joe Montana or Terry Bradshaw or whoever you want to call the best ever, Tom Brady, is rings. But that’s unfortunate, because in terms of what you see on the field, I don’t know if we have seen anything better than how’s he playing right now.”
